After diplomatic tension that has continued for about one and a half years, important steps are being taken towards normalizing relations between India and Bangladesh. Both countries are taking forward the process of fully restoring visa services, which is expected to give new impetus to the movement of people and bilateral relations.
According to reports, Bangladesh has already resumed issuing visas for Indian citizens across all categories. India is working towards restoring visa services in a phased manner. All the visa centers of Bangladesh, the High Commission in New Delhi and the Consulates in Kolkata, Agartala, Mumbai and Chennai are now fully operational.
These steps are being taken after Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman visited India. Restoration of visa services remained one of the major issues between the two sides. Bangladesh High Commissioner Riyaz Hamidullah said, “Visa services were temporarily stopped at some centers in December, which were resumed in February.”
The sourness in the relations between the two countries had increased after the events of August 2024. After the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power by foreign powers under the guise of student protests, an interim government was formed, led by Muhammad Yunus. Later, after Bangladesh Nationalist Party came to power, efforts to improve relations intensified.
According to sources, after visa services are completely normalized, both the countries will also focus on furthering the partnership in areas like economic cooperation, trade and energy connectivity. It is noteworthy that earlier this year, India had also supplied diesel to Bangladesh during the energy crisis caused by the Iran war.
Due to security reasons, visa services for Bangladeshi citizens were affected last year, but were not completely stopped. Visas continued to be issued in special cases, such as medical or family emergencies.
Let us tell you that recently Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was heard saying in an interview that he wants the relations between India and Bangladesh to never improve. They have taken such a stand because the problem of Bangladeshi infiltrators in India is very big, and also there is no extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh, due to which Bangladesh refuses to accept the Bangladeshi Muslims who have entered India illegally.
