Knews Desk-Seven Rajya Sabha MPs who left Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will meet President Draupadi Murmu on May 5. This meeting has been scheduled at 10:40 am. The MPs say that they will present their complaint to the President regarding the alleged political vendetta by the Punjab government.
Recently, a big change was seen in political developments, when seven Rajya Sabha MPs of AAP left the party and joined BJP. These MPs include Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Ashok Kumar Mittal, Vikramjit Singh Sahni and Rajendra Gupta. The Chairman of Rajya Sabha had also approved his proposal to merge with BJP, thereby formally accepting this political change.
These MPs have retained their membership by using the provisions of the anti-defection law. According to the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, if at least two-thirds of the members of a party agree to merge with another party, they are protected from disqualification. On this basis these MPs maintained their position. However, there is continuing controversy regarding this provision. Critics say that this system encourages political defection and raises questions on democratic accountability.
Amidst this entire incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will also meet the President on the same day. They are talking about merger of MPs and raising questions on the validity of this entire process. This is likely to increase the tension in Punjab politics. On the other hand, allegations are also being made by AAP that the rules were not followed properly in this merger process. The party has raised serious questions on the authenticity of the documents and the process and has sought intervention at the highest level in the matter.
Now this matter has taken the form of not only political but also constitutional debate. On one hand the MPs are justifying their decision, while on the other hand the opposition parties are calling it against democratic values. The meeting with the President on May 5 is being considered very important in this entire controversy.
