Friends, whenever a natural disaster occurs, there is huge loss of life and property, due to which people are greatly distressed. In such a situation, taking an important step towards strengthening the disaster management framework of the country, the Government of India has introduced a powerful new mobile-based alert system. Which is a major advancement in the field of public safety technology.
At the heart of this initiative is an integrated alert system called ‘SACHET’ (meaning ‘alert’), developed by C-DOT in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority. The system is based on global standards recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is already operational in all 36 states and union territories of India.
Main features of SACHET system
1. Alerts directly to every mobile user
The biggest advantage of SACHET is that it can send emergency alerts directly to mobile phones. By using cell broadcast and SMS technology.
2. Wide reach with multilingual support
The platform has already proven its capability by sending over 134 billion SMS alerts during calamities like cyclones, extreme weather and natural disasters.
3. Location-based targeting
SACHET sends geographically targeted alerts, meaning only people in the affected area receive relevant warnings. This reduces panic and ensures accurate communication during critical situations.
4. Based on global technology standards
The system follows the ‘Common Alerting Protocol’ (CAP) framework, making it reliable, efficient and in line with international best practices.
5. Nationwide Implementation
Developed under the Department of Telecommunications, the system has been fully deployed across India, ensuring nationwide coverage and readiness for emergencies.
One step towards a safe India
The launch of SACHET reflects the government’s commitment towards making every moment precious during disasters. Be it earthquake, flood, cyclone or any other emergency, this system ensures that.
