To achieve captaincy status in the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, players receive recognized status and public recognition and power over their teammates. The top billion-dollar teams require their most skilled players to handle increasing tactical demands because they compete in tight match situations.
The ongoing IPL 2026 season has highlighted this trend again, as captaincy duties have often come with a clear drop in personal performances from several team leaders.
The past three years have shown that IPL captains need to maintain their leadership responsibilities, which makes their personal performance decrease. Some players flourish in the role, but others like Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel have struggled to deliver the same match-winning performances while leading their teams. The following section presents an analysis of captains whose performance declined when they assumed leadership roles.
1. Hardik Pandya:
Hardik Pandya's batting and bowling performances have not met standards since he took over as Mumbai Indians captain in the IPL 2024 season. The Indian national team benefits from his proven ability to change games yet he has not scored a half-century in 37 matches as Mumbai Indians captain during his second period with the team.
Pandya led Gujarat Titans to their 2022 IPL championship yet his first seven seasons with Mumbai Indians show better performance numbers than his present output.
Pandya has failed to maintain steady command through his dual problems with personal performance and lack of leadership skills. After his success with Gujarat Titans he faced high expectations yet he achieved only 15 victories and 22 losses in 37 matches with Mumbai Indians which resulted in his poor success rate of 40.54 percent.
| Category | As a player | As a captain |
| Matches | 92 | 37 |
| Runs | 1,476 | 586 |
| Average | 27.33 | 20.92 |
| Wickets | 42 | 29 |
2. Axar Patel:
Axar Patel has played a total of 171 IPL matches and thus far he has participated in 103 matches for Delhi Capitals since joining the team in the 2019 IPL season. Rishabh Pant left the team during 2025 season which led to his appointment as permanent team captain after he served as interim captain during 2024 season.
The Delhi Capitals almost achieved their playoff goal in 2025 under his leadership. His bowling performance has not achieved the same steady results which he previously exhibited.
| Category | As a player | As a captain |
| Matches | 81 | 22 |
| Runs | 910 | 351 |
| Average | 20.68 | 21.93 |
| Wickets | 62 | 13 |
| Bowling average | 31.75 | 42.38 |
Axar has demonstrated less leadership strength during the current IPL 2026 season compared to his performance as team captain during IPL 2025 which led the team to a fifth-place victory.
3. Rishabh Pant:
Rishabh Pant's successful IPL career experienced a significant decline since he became Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain for the 2025 IPL season. The Delhi Capitals team became a strong opponent during his captaincy period yet Sanjiv Goenka spent almost US$3 million to sign him because people believed he would succeed. Pant has not demonstrated his worth to the organization for which they paid so much money.

Pant experienced his most challenging career period during his first LSG IPL season in 2025 when he managed to score only 269 runs across 13 innings, which included 118 runs from a single game. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter has not improved his performance in key situations throughout IPL 2026 which has resulted in him maintaining an insufficient batting average.
LSG finished seventh out of eight teams in IPL 2025 under Pant's captaincy. The team has become more dysfunctional because they have reached the lowest point in the IPL 2026 table.
| Category | Overall IPL career | As LSG captain |
| Matches | 133 | 22 |
| Runs | 3,742 | 458 |
| Average | 33.71 | 25.44 |
| Strike-rate | 146.40 | 146.40 |
Conclusion:
The IPL has proved that personal brilliance does not guarantee successful captaincy. Franchises should not connect star performances with captaincy ability because only some great players become natural leaders. Ruturaj Gaikwad faces difficulties when trying to maintain MS Dhoni's captaincy legacy. The stylish batter has maintained his scoring standards after taking charge of the team.

Riyan Parag has demonstrated positive leadership skills as Rajasthan Royals captain, even though his batting results have not been highly successful. The forthcoming IPL seasons will bring new captaincy options for Delhi Capitals and LSG. The Mumbai Indians management should assess Hardik Pandya's status as captain because the team already possesses two former T20 World Cup-winning Indian captains.
