Banerjee, who was seeking a fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister, told party workers and supporters to "wait and watch" as counting was still underway.

A meeting between a sitting Chief Minister and the Governor at such a juncture is significant under constitutional practice, as the Governor is the constitutional head of the state to whom a Chief Minister tenders resignation when the government no longer commands a majority.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the BJP headquarters at 6:30 PM, as the party moves towards a historic victory in the state.

Elections were held in West Bengal on April 23 and April 29, 2026, to elect all 294 members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The tenure of the outgoing Assembly was scheduled to end on May 7, 2026.
