Kinnigoli: A new 11 kV power substation has been commissioned at Elathur to address frequent electricity disruptions in Kinnigoli and nearby areas under the Kinnigoli and Kateel region. According to MESCOM, the facility will help ensure smoother and more reliable power supply for homes, industries, and businesses.

Earlier, power for several areas including Kinnigoli town, Ulepadi, Aikala, Kateel, and Ekkaru was supplied from the Mulki Sadashivnagar 11 kV substation. This created heavy load on a single centre, leading to repeated outages, especially during rains and strong winds. With the new substations at Elathur and Padubidri, the load on the Mulki station has been reduced.

The number of electricity connections in Kinnigoli has increased from about 7,000 to over 10,000 in recent years. Apart from houses, the region has hospitals, companies, factories, shops, and multi-storey buildings, which increased demand and led to frequent power issues. The demand for a new substation had been pending for a long time and has now been fulfilled.

Three feeder connections

The Kinnigoli region has more than 150 transformers. The new 11 kV substation will help manage these transformers and ensure quality power distribution. The substation is connected to three feeders. One feeder serves Ideal Company and Kinnigoli Mennabettu area, the second covers Guthakadu and Golijore, while power is also supplied to Ulepadi, Patte Cross, and Aikala regions.

What is a 11 kV substation?

A 11 kV substation reduces high voltage power (33 kV or 66 kV) to 11 kV and distributes it to industries, large buildings, and urban or rural areas. It includes transformers, circuit breakers, and safety equipment.

Devices such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, current transformers (CT), voltage transformers (VT), lightning arresters, and drop-out fuses help prevent overload. Any faults can be managed within the substation itself.

Substation built on one acre

The substation has been set up on about one acre of land near Ideal Company in Elathur. Officials said it will be developed in phases. Around 8 km of power line has been drawn from the Mulki Sadashivnagar station to the Elathur power house, with underground cables laid in some stretches. Staff and officials have been appointed to ensure 24-hour operations at the facility.
