lpg domestic cylinder
Ever since tension started in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz was completely closed, there has been a significant decline in the supply of domestic gas cylinders. Because of which many people of the country have shifted from gas cylinders to PNG and induction. Due to which there has been a huge decline in LPG consumption in the country in the month of April. Its figures have also been released by the government on Monday. Let us also tell you how much the consumption of LPG has decreased.
Biggest decline in consumption
According to the latest data released on Monday, the consumption of LPG in the country declined by more than 16 percent to 22 lakh tonnes in April due to disruption in energy supply due to conflict in West Asia. According to the data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Petroleum Ministry, domestic consumption of LPG declined by 16.16 percent on an annual basis in April this year to 22 lakh tonnes, whereas in April 2025 it was 26.2 lakh tonnes. There has been a decline in LPG consumption on monthly basis also. Domestic consumption of LPG in March 2026 was 23.79 lakh tonnes.
India imports 60 percent
India imports about 60 percent of its LPG needs, the bulk of which comes through the Strait of Hormuz. Supplies through this route have been affected due to the outbreak of military conflict between the US-Israel and Iran, which has disrupted gas consignments coming from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The government has reduced supplies to commercial consumers such as hotels and industries to maintain the availability of domestic cooking gas. Besides, the interval between two refillings of domestic cylinders has also been increased.
Big decline in ATF and diesel consumption
According to the data, aviation fuel (ATF) consumption declined by 1.37 percent to 7.61 lakh tonnes in April, reflecting the impact of airspace closure and reduction in flights. During this period, the growth rate of diesel consumption also slowed down and it increased by only 0.25 percent to 82.82 lakh tonnes. There was an increase of 8.1 percent in March. However, petrol consumption increased by 6.36 percent in April to 36.7 lakh tonnes. However, this increase is less than 7.6 percent in March. LPG consumption had been increasing steadily over the past few years due to the government's efforts to promote clean fuel, but the current global tensions have affected it.
