Mumbai Indians (MI) returned to winning ways after losing three games in a row after defeating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in what was a clash to avoid the embarrassment of being the wooden spoon holders.

How Mumbai Indians Can Qualify For IPL 2026 Playoffs?
The win has ensured that MI remains mathematically alive in the race to qualify for the playoffs, but the reality is they need a miracle to qualify. The Hardik Pandya-led side can only get to a maximum of 14 points even if they win their remaining matches this season.
For those unversed, since the tournament expanded to a 10-team event in 2022 (and also the 2011 season), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2024 is the only instance of a team qualifying for the playoffs with just 14 points.
As things stand, PBKS already have 13 points, and one win will ensure MI cannot catch up to them. Meanwhile, there is a four-way tie at 12 points (Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Gujarat Titans (GT)).
This means that all four of them need just one win to ensure MI cannot go past them, while two wins will mean they will cross out the chance of the five-time champions even being level with them.
Hence, MI needs to not just ensure they win all their remaining games but also win them by a huge margin. They also need to hope that two of RCB, SRH, RR, and GT do not win more than one more game or that one of them does if PBKS loses all their games.
The good news for MI is that they have a match left against each of RCB, PBKS, and RR, which gives them a chance to take points from those teams.
