Experts have shared the best ways for home bakers to make delicious and rich crumpets at home, and they urge people to leave out one common ingredient. Crumpets are relatively easy to make at home. While many people like to buy them from the supermarket during their weekly food shop, some opt to buy the ingredients and bake them at home. Warburton's, a brand that is famous for its supermarket crumpets, actually shared the ingredients to make their beloved crumpets.
Warburton's crumpets are an iconic British product, having been made for decades and showing no signs of losing popularity. Having started in a small grocery shop in Bolton, the iconic English brand is actually expanding its crumpet production this year. It recently announced an expansion of its facilities in the North of England, as the brand aims to bring crumpets to more people across the country. But if you want to try your hand at making them yourself at home, Warburton's previously shared the ingredients it uses.
And people who have made crumpets at home might notice that something is missing. Butter is commonly included in crumpet recipes, and is recommended by experts at the likes of BBC Good Food.
The ingredients Warburton's says it uses in its crumpets are:
- 150g plain white flour
- 200ml water
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp dried yeast
And this is the method to follow:
- Add flour, water and salt to a mixing bowl. Mix with a whisk for at least five minutes to create a crumpet batter.
- Mix a few millilitres of water into the dried yeast.
- Add sugar, baking powder and yeast mixture to the bowl and mix for another 30 seconds until there is a clear batter.
- Cover mixing bowl and put in a warm place for 15 minutes.
- Place a greased metal biscuit cutter into the middle of a non-stick frying pan. Pre-heat your frying pan on a hob on a medium-high heat setting.
- Give the batter a stir to remove any large air bubbles before you start. Use a ladle to drop approximately 60g of batter into the cutter inside the pan. Wait for approximately four minutes, then carefully lift the ring off the crumpet.
- Remove the baked crumpet from the pan (if the top looks a bit gooey, flip it over in the pan for a few seconds). Then cool.
- Repeat the above to make as many as you like.
