This financial year can bring a big gift for lakhs of government employees of West Bengal. The unilateral victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has breathed new life into the economic hopes of the state employees. This victory is directly related to that big promise, which can completely change the salary mathematics of the employees. For the employees who have been waiting for the 7th Pay Commission for a long time, now there are clear signs that the wait is over. Let us understand in detail why this pay commission was stuck in the state till now and what major changes will take place in the salary structure with the coming of the new government.
What is PM Modi's 'guarantee'?
During this time's assembly election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in the rally in Purba Midnapur that the 7th Pay Commission will be constituted as soon as the BJP government is formed in the state. This financial issue was on priority among the 6 major guarantees given by the Prime Minister. Now that the mandate has come, the employees are confident that like the Centre, the state too will soon see a big and positive revision in their allowances and basic salary.
Why has the 7th Pay Commission not been implemented yet?
The question that often arises regarding Pay Commission is that when the Central Government implemented it long ago, then why Bengal was left behind in it. Actually, there is no constitutional obligation that the pay commission of the state and central government should be the same. Every state constitutes a pay commission based on its fiscal health and budget. Till now, due to its budgetary priorities, salaries were being given in West Bengal only on the basis of the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission. The matter remained stuck due to assessment of additional financial burden on the state exchequer and fund allocation. But now with the formation of the new government, there is every possibility that this financial hurdle will be removed, which will directly benefit the purchasing power of the state employees.
8th pay commission stir intensifies at center
On one hand, Bengal is standing at the threshold of the 7th Pay Commission, while on the other hand, the Modi government at the Center seems to be quite active in the preparations for the 8th Pay Commission. Recently an important meeting of the Pay Commission with the National Council (NC-JCM) was held in Delhi. In this discussion, fitment factor, retirement benefits and salary revision have been discussed in detail. This 8th Pay Commission constituted in November 2025 has to submit its recommendations within 18 months. Now the eyes of the employees of Bengal are fixed on how soon the state government prepares the draft of the 7th Pay Commission and implements it and when does this increased salary start getting credited in the accounts.
