The Met Gala 2026, held on Monday night, May 4, 2026, saw the world’s biggest stars gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s co-chairs include Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams, and the energy around the evening is already electric.
The theme this year is Costume Art, which places fashion on the same pedestal as fine art. From May 10, 2026 through January 10, 2027, the museum’s brand-new Condé Nast Galleries, spanning nearly 12,000 square feet, will showcase hundreds of pieces centred around the dressed body, paired with thematically relevant fashions. The evening’s dress code, Fashion is Art, invites attendees to essentially become living canvases themselves, which leaves a great deal of room for creative interpretation.
While the dress code is broad by design, the exhibit’s sub-sections are likely to offer some creative direction for guests. Some may lean into classical Hellenistic drapery, others may explore the anatomical body, and given the ongoing cultural fascination with naked dressing, there is every chance that many guests will get inventive with how they pay tribute to the nude form.
Beyond the co-chairs, the host committee includes Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz, alongside a lineup of notable names such as Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Alex Consani, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, Lisa, Teyana Taylor, Lauren Wasser, A’ja Wilson and Yseult.
Here’s a look at some of the red carpet outfits from the night, and how well they aligned with the theme:

This look aligns strongly with the Costume Art theme. The outfit goes beyond conventional fashion and feels like a crafted piece of wearable art. The intricate crystal work creates a sculptural, almost anatomical pattern. The dramatic feathered cape and extended train add a strong sense of theatricality. It feels like a costume designed for performance or storytelling. The ornate headpiece further elevates the ensemble. It gives the look a distinct, character-like presence rather than just a red carpet appearance. Altogether, the outfit blurs the line between fashion and art. It makes for a fitting interpretation of the theme.

This look is a literal interpretation of a marble statue. The fabric looks like carved stone with realistic folds and a veiled face. It is the definition of Costume Art because it turns the wearer into a museum piece.

Sabrina Carpenter wears a dark dress made of film strips wrapped around her body. It has a high slit and sparkly chains. She wears a jewel headpiece. Using actual film makes her look like a walking piece of cinema art.

An ethereal, bridal-inspired look that leans into fantasy and softness. The sheer, crystal-studded gown paired with the dramatic veil creates a dreamy, almost character-like presence. It fits the Costume Art theme through its theatrical styling and narrative feel.

This look feels very sculptural and dramatic, with heavy embellishment and a strong red-carpet presence. It fits Costume Art well because it turns the outfit into a moving art piece rather than just fashion.
Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian wears a shiny orange bodysuit that looks like molded metal. It has a high neck and a split skirt. The reflective, robotic style treats the body like a modern sculpture, fitting the 2026 art theme quite well.
Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway wears a black and white ballgown featuring hand-painted illustrations of a dove and a hand. The bold, graphic lines make her look like a charcoal sketch come to life. It is a literal and elegant take on art.
Kylie Jenner

A refined, sculptural look that leans into classic couture with a modern edge. The corseted bodice and flowing embellished skirt create a graceful silhouette. It partially fits the “Costume Art” theme through structure, but feels more elegant than theatrical.
Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny wears a structured black suit with a dramatic oversized bow and a gold-tipped cane. His white hair and beard transform him into a classic portrait. It uses historical style to represent artful costumes.
Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan wears a long black coat with a massive faux fur collar over a simple tie and jeans. It mixes high fashion with casual street style. While interesting, it feels more like an outfit than a piece of art.
