Mumbai Indians were left stunned at the coin toss when Suryakumar Yadav appeared as captain instead of Hardik Pandya, for what is a must-win game in the IPL 2026 against the Lucknow Super Giants. The unusual decision led to many questions especially since the MI camp was fighting to keep their playoff chances alive. Later it emerged that Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the match with a sudden medical issue.

Initially Suryakumar who walked out for the coin toss at the Wankhede stadium briefly announced that their skipper was unwell and would lead the team for the night. Shortly after the toss, it became clear from team sources and match officials Hardik Pandya has been suffering from a back spasm. Back spasms are very common in cricket they are quite painful and can be treated only with a complete rest and treatment regime.

This late injury has compelled the Mumbai Indians to rejig their team just minutes before the start of the game. The absence of Hardik Pandya is a significant blow because he is an all-rounder and is considered one of the most vital players in the Mumbai Indians setup due to his contributions with both bat and ball.

Taking charge in the absence of Hardik, Suryakumar Yadav led the side from the front. He has already captained the side at the international level and is considered one of the calmest players to lead under pressure situations. To strengthen the batting line-up the Mumbai Indians have roped in Corbin Bosch into the playing XI and the side faces a big test as it needs to acclimatise quickly in the absence of their captain in this crucial match.

The Mumbai Indians have had a mediocre campaign this season so far and the addition of another problem at such a crucial junction will test the resilience of the entire setup. The medical team is at present observing the condition of Hardik Pandya and though the condition might heal quickly due to rest recovery can vary based on the intensity of the back spasm.
