Hindus in West Bengal have now started breathing freely and have started expressing their religion and ideology of nationalism openly. After the historic and landslide victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the assembly elections, a wave of major cultural and political change is visible in the state. A famous Durga temple in Asansol in West Bardhaman district, which remained closed for years due to blockade by local Muslims, threats of riots and restrictions by the Mamata government, finally reopened for devotees on Monday (May 4).
This temple, run by Sri Sri Durgamata Charitable Trust, was almost completely closed for the last several years. Here limited worship was allowed only on special occasions like Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja. Riots by Islamists and strict restrictions by the Mamata government remain the main reasons behind the closure of the temple.
Newly elected BJP MLA from Asansol North Krishnendu Mukherjee had pledged during the election campaign that if he wins, he will keep this temple open for a year. Keeping his promise after the victory, he opened the doors of the temple on Monday, where a large number of devotees and BJP workers reached, offered prayers and celebrated.
This development has happened just after the major political upheaval in West Bengal. By winning 206 out of 293 seats in the state, BJP has ended the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee. BJP won 206 seats, leaving the majority mark of 147 far behind. Trinamool Congress (TMC) is reduced to only 80 seats, while one round of counting is still left on Rajarhat New Town seat. In Paschim Bardhaman district, BJP has captured all the nine assembly seats in the district in a clean sweep.
The opening of this temple to the local residents is not just a religious affair but is being seen as a symbol of the end of the era of Wolism and Muslim appeasement in the state. Devotees say that the temple, whose doors were closed due to fear of the administration, will now be able to worship without fear.
It is noteworthy that voting was held in West Bengal in two phases on 23rd and 29th April, in which a record voting percentage of more than 92 percent was recorded. Citing serious electoral crimes and violation of the democratic process, the Election Commission has decided to hold re-polling on Falta seat on May 21. The results of Falta seat will be declared on May 24.
BJP MLA Krishnendu Mukherjee, who promised to remove the restrictions on the temple, said, “This victory is a victory for the identity and rights of Bengal. We had promised that the locks of the temples that were closed due to injustice would be opened and today the people of Asansol have seen with their own eyes the beginning of change.”
