Met Gala 2026: Met Gala is where Alia Bhatt, Kiara Advani and last year Shahrukh Khan registered their appearance. This time it was the turn of director-producer Karan Johar. Who made her debut at the Met Gala 2026 and managed to win everyone’s hearts with her stunning outfit. This time the theme of Met Gala is Art Costume and Karan has used this theme perfectly with Manish Malhotra’s design.
Apart from Manish Malhotra, Karan Johar was the only Indian film personality to attend the Met Gala this time. Karan shared many beautiful pictures of this special occasion on his Instagram account. Along with the pictures, he also wrote an emotional and heart touching note. In it he said that a long dream of his life has now been fulfilled. It felt like a full circle for him. She especially thanked Manish Malhotra for preparing her stunning and very beautiful outfit.
Special thanks to Manisha Malhotra
Karan wrote, ‘This moment was not just about fashion for me. It was about storytelling. This was the right opportunity to carry forward the legacy of Raja Ravi Varma and bring him back on a global stage. It was about representing India and our culture, our art and our storytelling on the global stage. Thirty years of friendship and collaboration with Manish Malhotra and still achieving new achievements together. I thank you and your team very much for this memorable moment.
a moving artwork
Karan Johar, famous for his brilliant films, adopted the same style of storytelling at the Met Gala. Taking inspiration from the art of Raja Ravi Varma, he created his first Met Gala look so special that it became a walking artwork. Karan believes that fashion is not just about wearing clothes. This is also an art that tells a story. Like his films, he raised the question through this look, what is it saying and how does it make people feel after seeing it? Her entire outfit was a tribute to India’s great painter Raja Ravi Varma. Designed by Manish Malhotra and styled by Eka Lakhani, the outfit was inspired by his famous paintings – lotus, swan and classical Indian images.
Most important things about this look
The entire outfit was hand painted. No print or digital technology was used. The part which is inside and is not visible was also painted by hand. This shows the dedication of the craftsmen. The team of artisans spent more than 5600 hours in 86 days to make this outfit. The borders and motifs were created in a special way. The zardosi were mounted on a rubberized base to give them a raised (3D) look, so that they appeared to emerge from the fabric. The embroidery was varnished with a finish similar to acrylic and oil paint, giving it the shine and depth of an original painting. Karan Johar Johar’s outfit was designed with intricate detailing. The most special thing about the look was his dramatic cap. Karan wore a traditional Indian cap in a completely modern and structured style. Beautiful gold painting was done by hand on this cap. The essence of Raja Ravi Varma’s famous paintings ‘Hans Damayanti’, ‘Kadambari’, ‘Arjuna and Subhadra’ was skillfully incorporated in the cap.
Indians did not know about Met Gala
Karan spoke to the international media during an interview before attending an event organized at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He recalled the time when Met Gala was not much known among the general public in India. However, it was Vogue magazine that introduced him to this event and he always dreamed of seeing himself on its front page. Johar also told that if he gets a chance, he would like to take a selfie with Sabrina Carpender, who is his daughter Roohi’s favorite actress.
