The cleanest air of this year was recorded in the capital on Monday. After about 25 days, the air quality index AQI reached below 100, giving people partial relief from pollution. According to CPCB’s air bulletin, Delhi’s AQI was recorded at 88 on Monday, which falls in the “satisfactory” category. During this period, the main pollutants included nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), ozone (O₃) and carbon monoxide (CO). However, this relief is not going to last long. According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, from today the pollution level may increase again and AQI may reach the normal range.

Earlier on April 8, AQI 93 was recorded. This is the third time so far this year that the AQI has been below 100—AQI was recorded at 93 on March 20 and April 8. The cleanest air in Delhi was in Shadipur area, where AQI was recorded at just 46. Whereas in other cities of NCR, different levels of air quality were seen in Faridabad (73), Ghaziabad’s 114, Greater Noida’s S9, Gurugram’s 104 and Noida (s6). According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, the pollution level will remain normal from May 5 to 7, but after that it may go into the “worse than normal” category.

The wind speed on Monday was between 20 to 70 km/hour, due to which the pollutant particles were spread and the air remained clean. The wind speed is likely to be 12 to 40 km/hr on Tuesday and 12 to 20 km/hr on Wednesday, due to which the pollution level may increase again.

GRAP-1 removed from Delhi-NCR

The CAQM) sub-committee reviewed the situation on Monday and removed the first phase (GRAP-1) of the GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) with immediate effect. It is noteworthy that GRAP-1 was implemented after the pollution level reached the “poor” category on April 16. But in recent times, air quality has improved due to rain and favorable weather, due to which this decision was taken.

In the CAQM meeting, the current situation of Delhi-NCR was assessed and it was found that the weather is currently favorable for pollution control. On this basis, it was decided to remove GRAP-1. However, the committee has directed all concerned agencies to continue taking necessary steps to control pollution. Besides, it has also been said to maintain strict monitoring of air quality.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of light rain or showers with strong winds in different areas of the city on Tuesday also. The maximum temperature on Tuesday is expected to be between 32 to 34 degrees Celsius, which is considered below normal. According to the forecast, light clouds will remain present in Delhi for the next three to four days. Due to this, at present there are less chances of the scorching heat returning and people will continue to get relief.

impact of western disturbances

The major reason for relief from the heat this time in the capital has been the repeatedly active western disturbances. According to weather department data, more than 12 western disturbances affected Delhi’s weather during March and April. These disturbances caused periodic rains, dust storms and hailstorms, resulting in a significant drop in temperature. Usually by this time it starts becoming extremely hot, but this time the weather remained relatively pleasant.

84% more rainfall in April

According to the Meteorological Department, 15 percent more rainfall than normal has been recorded in March and 84 percent more rainfall in April. Experts say that due to the repeatedly active western disturbances, there has been a series of rains, storms and cloudy weather in Delhi, due to which the temperature remained under control and people got relief from the heat. The same pattern continues in the first week of May also. According to the department, there is a possibility of rain in the coming days as well, due to which there are less chances of the scorching heat returning.

Electricity consumption decreased in the capital

The effect of changes in weather is now clearly visible on the demand for electricity. There has been a decrease of about 200-300 MW in power demand in the last two days. According to officials of power companies, the maximum power demand in Delhi on Monday was 5159 MW, which is much less as compared to recent days. Whereas on Sunday this figure was recorded at 5836 MW. Officials said that the demand for electricity completely depends on the weather patterns. In the last days of April, due to strong sunlight and humidity, electricity consumption increased rapidly and one day the demand reached 7000 MW.
