Western fans have discovered a "masterpiece" TV series that flew under the radar for "too long" - and some have called it better than Yellowstone. The series was first released in 2023 on Sky Atlantic, with 10 episodes released in total - all taking place in the Old West in the 1860s and 1870s.
The aptly titled Django follows the titular character as he travels to New Babylon after the murder of his family, hoping to find a daughter he believes survived in a city that welcomes outcasts regardless of their background. Determined to reconnect with his daughter Sarah, Django encounters New Babylon founder John Ellis and his merciless rival Elizabeth Thurman.
The series stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Nicholas Pinnock, Lisa Vicari and Noomi Rapace.
Based on the 1966 Italian film of the same name - directed by Sergio Corbucci - Django slots into what fans have nicknamed the 'Django cinematic universe' of spaghetti Westerns, including Quentin Tarantino's 2012 release Django Unchained and 1987's official sequel Django Strikes Again, starring Franco Nero.
Critics have branded the show "defiantly gruesome" and "ruthless". Decider encouraged fans to stream it, writing: "Django will make for a good distraction if you're into classic Westerns."
Despite a low average IMDb rating, one reviewer said the show was "brilliant".
Someone else said: "Abigail [Thorn] sparkles every time she's on screen and it was lovely to see her act in a high calibre production like this."
While another reviewer on Reddit posted: "There are heavy themes of revenge and forgiveness in this, and most of the cast is morally grey. It's interesting!"
