Kolkata5 May. Counting of votes for West Bengal Assembly elections: Not even a day has passed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout notice against Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner (DCP) Shantanu Sinha Biswas. The agency fears that he may try to flee the country. This action has been taken in the money laundering case to criminal Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu.
Shantanu Biswas interrogated several times
According to ED officials, Shantanu Biswas was summoned for questioning several times as part of the investigation into financial transactions linked to the alleged criminal syndicate run by Biswajit Poddar. However, he has not appeared before the agency yet. According to sources, several cases have been registered against Sona Pappu, a resident of Ballygunge in South Kolkata, under land grabbing, extortion recovery and Arms Act.
Money laundering investigation started
ED had started investigation into money laundering on the basis of these allegations. Businessman Jai Kamdar has already been arrested in this case. In connection with the investigation, ED had recently raided the residence of Shantanu Biswas on Fern Road. He has not been seen in public since the raid. After this, the agency sent summons to him and his two sons – Sayantan and Manish – to appear at the ED office at CGO Complex, but no one appeared on the scheduled date.
Name came in sand smuggling
Earlier, ED had also summoned Shantanu Biswas in another case to sand smuggling. Alleged financial irregularities are being investigated in this case. However, this time also he did not appear himself and the lawyer reached the ED office on his behalf.
ED officials say that it is necessary to interrogate Shantanu Biswas in both the cases. In view of his absence and the fear of possible absconding, a lookout notice has been issued so that he cannot leave the country.
