digital desk- Speculations about change of leadership and cabinet reshuffle have once again gained momentum in Karnataka politics. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday broke his silence on the demand for making DK Shivakumar the Chief Minister and made several big statements on the recent election results. This stance of the Chief Minister has given new impetus to the ongoing ‘power sharing’ discussions within the state Congress, especially when the two and a half year tenure of the government is coming to a close. When asked about possible reshuffle in the cabinet, Siddaramaiah replied in a very measured manner. He clarified that the final decision on changes in the portfolios of ministers or inclusion of new faces will be taken by the party high command. The Chief Minister said, “Whenever we are called to Delhi, we will go there and discuss with the top leadership. At present everything depends on the discretion of the high command.”
Big statement on coronation of DK Shivkumar
The most shocking statement came on the demand to make Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar the Chief Minister. On this demand being continuously raised by his supporters, Siddaramaiah said, “It is not wrong for the supporters to demand the post of Chief Minister for their leader.” Political analysts are considering this statement as very important. It is believed that the ‘so-called’ agreement made between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the post of Chief Minister for two and a half years at the time of their victory in 2023, is going to complete two and a half years in November 2025. In such a situation, this statement of Siddaramaiah could be a sign of some big change.
Analysis on election results of other states
Siddaramaiah also expressed his opinion on the election results of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. On Mamata Banerjee’s defeat, he said that after being in power for 15 years, ‘anti-incumbency’ (anti-incumbency wave) could be a natural reason. He also cited the claims of removal of 91 lakh names from the voter list as a possible technical reason for the defeat. At the same time, on the explosive entry of ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay’s party TVK in Tamil Nadu, he said that the strong desire for change among the youth has given such huge public support to an actor, which is really shocking.
ball in the high command’s court
Amidst these speculations about change of leadership, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has already made it clear that no definite date has been fixed in this regard yet. According to Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and himself will collectively decide on the future of the state. At the same time, DK Shivakumar has also made it clear after his recent visit to Delhi that whatever order is given by the high command, it will be acceptable to both him and Siddaramaiah.
