Following the West Bengal election results, the historic Durga temple in Asansol, which was almost closed for 21 years, has reopened. Newly elected BJP MLA Krishnendu Mukherjee, fulfilling his election promise, opened the locks of the temple, which has created a wave of happiness among the devotees.
The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections have not only changed the political atmosphere in the state, but have also opened the way for faith that had been closed for decades. The historic 'Shri-Shri Durgamata Charitable Trust' temple located in Bustin Bazaar area of Asansol is now fully opened for worship every day after a long wait of 21 years.
Freedom from two decades of imprisonment
This Durga temple in Bustin Bazaar is a center of deep faith for the local people. But for the last two decades this temple had become a victim of local communal tension and political tussle. The doors of the temple were opened only twice a year—for 10 days on the occasion of Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja. For the rest of the year, devotees had to return from outside the temple with folded hands. This temple remained locked for 21 years.
MLA Krishnendu Mukherjee kept his promise
This time in the assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a landslide victory on all the 9 seats of West Burdwan district. Newly elected BJP MLA from Asansol North seat Krishnendu Mukherjee had made a big promise to the devotees during the election campaign. He had announced, 'If we win, we will remove this political lock on the temple and open the temple to the public 365 days a year.' As soon as the results came, Mukherjee fulfilled his promise by reaching the temple himself and opening the lock.
Tears of happiness in the eyes of devotees
As soon as the doors of the temple opened, there was a festival like atmosphere in the entire Bustin Bazaar area. Thousands of devotees entered the temple amid the sound of conch shells and cheers. Tears welled up in the eyes of many elderly devotees as they were happy that the wait of decades was over. The videos of this emotional moment are becoming increasingly viral on social media. Local people say, 'This is not just a political victory, but the restoration of our religious rights.'

Local economy will also get strengthened
The daily opening of the temple not only has religious sentiments attached to it, but will also support the local economy. Small shopkeepers selling flowers, fruits and puja materials around the temple are now hopeful of getting business throughout the year.
Swearing in of new government
Out of 293 seats in West Bengal, BJP has ousted the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government from power by winning 206 seats. The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister of West Bengal is to be held on May 9, but even before that, major changes have started appearing in the state.
