Changsha, May 5. Information about a major explosion in a firecracker plant in Hunan province of Central China has come to light. According to information shared by Chinese officials, 21 people died and 61 others were injured in this blast. After the blast, the rescue operation has been started rapidly. According to Chinese media, the explosion occurred at around 4:43 pm on Monday evening at the plant of Husheng firecracker manufacturing and display company. It is in Liuyang, a provincial-level city of Changsha, the capital of Hunan.
More than 480 rescuers in five teams have been sent for the rescue and three rescue robots have also been deployed. There are also two black powder warehouses around the place where the blast took place. Therefore, the rescue team evacuated nearby people from the area and created a buffer zone to prevent another accident. By 8 am on Tuesday, rescue teams had confirmed the casualties after the first round of searches. The injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment and the second round of search is going on. The Ministry of Emergency Management has sent experts to the spot to help in emergency rescue efforts.
News agency Xinhua reported that the company in-charge has been taken into custody by the police and the cause of the accident is being investigated. Rescue teams had to evacuate everyone within a 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) radius of the fireworks plant. He also took measures like maintaining moisture in the area to prevent other accidents while rescuing people. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for every effort to find those still missing and rescue the injured.
Xi also called for an investigation into the accident so that those responsible can be held accountable, state media reported. Liuyang city is known for making firecrackers, with reports describing it as the world’s largest firecracker manufacturing city. There have been incidents of explosions at firecracker factories and shops in China before and they are often fatal. Earlier in February, 12 people were killed in a blast at a firecracker shop in Hubei province.
