New Delhi: Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has said that she plans to opt for a gradual transition plan and named her niece, Claire Mazumdar, as her top choice to take over as chairperson of Biocon.

Majumdar, however, made it clear that the leadership transition would happen over the next five years and she is not stepping away anytime soon. The Biocon founder said this during an interview to Fortune India.

“I am the sole owner of Biocon, and I need to make sure that I put it in good hands. I have seen my niece Claire as my successor, because I think she has proved to me that she can run a company,” Mazumdar-Shaw told Fortune India.

Who is Claire Mazumdar

Claire Mazumdar is the CEO Bicara since 2018. Prior to this, she worked with Third Rock Ventures and Rheos Medicines. Notably, Bicara was listed on Nasdaq in 2024 at a valuation exceeding $800 million. Biocon has a 10% stake in the company post-listing.

Biocon is a global biopharmaceutical company.

Biocon appoints Shreehas Tambe as CEO & MD

Biocon appointed Shreehas Tambe as its Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, with effect from April 1, 2026. As the first CEO of the integrated Biocon, Tambe will lead the combined platform spanning biosimilars and generics, strengthening the company’s ability to operate at scale and compete effectively in global markets, the comoany said in its release.

The global biopharmaceutical company also appointed Kedar Upadhye as Chief Financial Officer.
