Adhik Maas 2026: Malmas i.e. Adhik Maas of the year 2026 is considered very special from the point of view of astrology and religion. This is not just an extra month, but a special opportunity for spiritual practice and introspection. This time, Malmas, which will last from 17th May 2026 to 15th June 2026, will put a stop to auspicious works for a whole month. That means marriage, house warming, mundan or other auspicious functions will not be done during this period. Let us know what happens in which doing auspicious works is prohibited.
Why is Malmas of 2026 special?
The year 2026 also becomes special because this time the calendar will have 13 months instead of 12. Such a coincidence does not come every year. According to astrological calculations, the position of the planets during this period is considered very favorable for devotion, meditation and spiritual practice. This is the reason why this time is also called Purushottam month, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
What is Malamas?
When the Sun does not enter from one zodiac sign to another, then that period is called Malmas or Adhik Maas. Normally, the Sun changes its zodiac sign (Sankranti) every month, but when this change does not happen in any month, then that month is called Malmas.

Why does Malmas occur?
The basis of Malamas is hidden in our ancient astronomy. The Hindu calendar is based on the movement of both the Sun and the Moon. While the solar year is approximately 365 days, the lunar year is approximately 354 days. In this way, there is a difference of about 11 days every year. This difference increases to about one month every 2.5 to 3 years. To balance this difference, an additional month is added, which is called Adhik Maas or Malmaas.
Why are auspicious works not done?
According to religious beliefs, Malamas is kept for spiritual progress rather than worldly works. During this period, it is considered auspicious to postpone functions like marriage, engagement, housewarming etc. It is believed that worldly work done at this time does not give auspicious results, hence doing auspicious works is prohibited during this time.
Importance of worshiping Lord Vishnu in Malmas
Malmas is called Purushottam month and it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to the scriptures, worshiping Lord Vishnu, fasting, telling stories and doing charity in this month gives many times more results. During this time, devotees recite Vishnu Sahasranama, study Geeta, visit temples and donate to the needy. It is believed that the person who does devotion with true heart in this month, the troubles of his life go away and he gets mental peace.
What to do and what not to do?
During Malmas, worship, chanting, penance, charity and religious activities should be encouraged. On the other hand, one should avoid marriage, starting a new business or making any big investment. This is the time for introspection and connecting with God.
