Guwahati, May 5: An adult Oriental pied hornbill has been spotted in Pasighat, located in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, marking its return after a significant absence.
The bird was seen near the local forest office by local resident Biswajit Tayeng, which has sparked interest among wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists, according to officials on Tuesday.
This sighting is interpreted as a positive ecological indicator, suggesting that forest conditions and habitat stability are on the rise.
According to an official, “This sighting suggests that the ecosystem is still favorable for species that thrive in mature trees and undisturbed forest areas.”
Hornbills, often referred to as the “farmers of the forest,” play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.
They are essential for seed dispersal across vast distances, which aids in forest regeneration and supports biodiversity. Their presence typically indicates healthy habitats with sufficient tree cover and food availability.
Forest officials noted that the hornbill's return after a long absence may indicate improved habitat conditions in Pasighat, potentially reflecting the success of ongoing conservation efforts.
Experts emphasize that hornbills are particularly sensitive to environmental changes and depend on large, mature trees for nesting and feeding.
Their reappearance underscores the importance of protecting natural habitats, reducing deforestation, and minimizing human interference in forest regions.
This development also highlights Arunachal Pradesh's significance within the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot, recognized as one of the world's richest yet most vulnerable ecosystems.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein expressed his enthusiasm over the sighting, describing it as a reassuring indicator of ecological health. He stated, “Its presence signals a healthy ecosystem, as hornbills are crucial for seed dispersal and forest regeneration,” in a social media post.
Officials reiterated the importance of enhancing conservation initiatives and fostering community involvement to maintain such positive developments.
