New Fire TV Stick update just blocked millions from popular streaming app

Fire TV Stick owners are now well used to regular warnings about 'dodgy' content being blocked on their devices. Now there's a fresh alert, and this time it has nothing to do with illegal streaming or watching movies without permission. The latest issue, which has been spotted by the eagle-eyed team at AFTV News, affects millions using older Fire devices, with many now unable to tune into content via the HBO Max platform.

For those not in the know, HBO Max recently launched in the UK and offers access to a vast library of content for a small monthly fee. Prices start at £4.99 and offers acclaimed HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, DC content, and reality TV from Discovery.

Titles currently available include Euphoria, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Succession, along with a huge collection of Harry Potter content.

Sadly, anyone with a Fire TV Stick running Fire OS 5 or earlier will no longer be able to watch, as support for this operating system was recently discontinued.

"You can stream HBO Max on phones, tablets, computers, TVs, streaming players, set-top boxes, and game consoles," HBO's page states.

"Support includes Amazon Fire TV devices with Fire OS 6 or later - Vega OS 1 or later."

Devices affected by this new block include the hugely popular Fire TV Stick (2nd-gen), which is thought to be one of Amazon's biggest ever sellers.

Sadly, unlike some other products like phones, PCs and tablets, Amazon does not offer operating system upgrades, which means Fire TV Sticks are always stuck with the same OS version they originally shipped with.

That means owners can't upgrade from Fire OS 5 to a newer version - such as Fire OS 6. If you have an older Fire TV Stick and want HBO Max access, you'll need to buy a more modern device to continue watching.
