The discussions surrounding the 8th Pay Commission have gained momentum, with central employees and pensioners expressing heightened expectations. The National Council and various employee organizations have presented significant demands to the government, including salary increases, adjustments to the fitment factor, enhancements in allowances, and the reinstatement of the old pension scheme. The outcomes of these proposals could directly impact the financial well-being of millions of employees and pensioners across the nation.
Demand for Salary Increases
One of the primary demands focuses on raising the minimum wage. Currently set at ₹18,000, there is a proposal to increase it to ₹69,000. Additionally, a fitment factor of 3.83 times has been requested, which could significantly boost the overall salaries of employees. This proposal takes into account family needs, inflation, and the costs associated with modern living.
Increment and Promotion Requests
Employees are also advocating for changes regarding increments and promotions. At present, the annual increment stands at 3%, which they propose to increase to 6%. Furthermore, they are requesting a guarantee of at least five promotions over a 30-year career, along with two additional increments for each promotion.
Changes in Allowances and Leave Policies
Significant changes are also being sought in allowances and leave policies. Employees have demanded a threefold increase in HRA, CEA, and other allowances, linking them to the dearness allowance. Additionally, suggestions have been made to introduce new provisions such as menstrual leave, paternity leave, and parental care leave. There is also a proposal to raise the limit for leave encashment to 600 days.
Pension Demands from Employees
Employees have made their stance on pensions very clear. They are calling for the abolition of the National Pension System and the Unified Pension Scheme, advocating for the restoration of the old pension scheme. Furthermore, they are requesting the implementation of One Rank One Pension for pensioners and the reinstatement of commuted pensions after 11 years. If the government responds positively to these demands, it could provide significant relief to millions of employees and pensioners. However, the final decision will depend on the government and the commission's recommendations.
