LONDON (AP) - Bukayo Saka scored a crucial goal just before halftime, giving Arsenal a 1-0 lead in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
The goal came in the 45th minute when Saka tapped in a rebound after Jan Oblak saved a shot from Leandro Trossard, allowing Arsenal to head into the break with the advantage following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Match Overview
Throughout the first half, Arsenal dominated possession, controlling about two-thirds of the ball. However, they struggled to test Oblak until Saka's goal, in what proved to be a tense and physical match.
In the 35th minute, Arsenal players appealed for a penalty when Antoine Griezmann collided with Trossard in the penalty area, but referee Daniel Siebert did not award the foul.
Path to the Final
The winner of this semifinal will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final. PSG secured a 5-4 victory in the first leg of their semifinal, with the second leg scheduled to take place in Munich on Wednesday.
Arsenal is aiming to reach the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years, while Atletico seeks to end a decade-long wait. Both teams are vying for their first European Cup title.
Historical Context
Atletico Madrid has reached the Champions League final twice under coach Diego Simeone, in 2014 and 2016, but lost both times to their city rivals, Real Madrid. Arsenal, on the other hand, has only reached the final once, in 2006, when they were defeated by Barcelona.
