A 71-year-old soccer fan was arrested for allegedly abusing Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match, according to Everton's announcement on Tuesday.
The Merseyside Police detained the individual on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense following reports from supporters and stadium staff during the game on Monday.
Club and Police Responses
In a statement, Everton condemned all forms of racism and discrimination, emphasizing that such behavior is entirely unacceptable.
Manchester City welcomed the prompt action taken by Everton and the police to identify the individual responsible for the alleged abuse.
Previous Incidents Involving Semenyo
This incident is not the first time Semenyo has faced racial abuse; he reported a similar experience during a match in Liverpool while playing for Bournemouth in the season opener.
During that game, a Liverpool fan allegedly targeted him as he prepared to take a throw-in, leading to a pause in the match for the fan's ejection. That individual is expected to appear in court later this year.
Broader Issues of Racism in Soccer
Manchester City also denounced the online racist abuse directed at defender Marc Guéhi following their match that ended in a 3-3 draw.
The club reaffirmed its commitment to support both Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi, stating that discrimination in any form will not be tolerated in the sport.
