digital desk- The results of Assam Assembly Elections 2026 have created a new history in the politics of North-East. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA has not only scored a hat-trick of victories but has also wiped out the opposition with a two-thirds majority. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is going to take charge of the state once again. After this big victory, Sarma was seen in his familiar style and while taking a sharp dig at Congress, he also attributed his victory to the ‘mistakes’ of the opposition leaders.
BJP’s ‘Mission 100+’ successful: majority on its own for the first time
Out of 126 assembly seats in Assam, NDA has achieved a record breaking victory by capturing 102 seats. The biggest thing about this election is that for the first time, BJP has crossed the majority mark on its own by winning 82 seats in Assam. Earlier in 2016 and 2021, the party was reduced to 60 seats each. Among the allies, Bodo People’s Front (BPF) and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) strengthened the alliance by winning 10 seats each. On the other hand, Congress has been reduced to just 19 seats, while AIUDF and Raijor Dal have got only 2 seats each. TMC had to be content with just one seat in the state.
Himanta’s taunt: “Pawan Kheda helped me”
While talking to the media after the victory, Himanta Biswa Sarma fiercely targeted Congress leader Pawan Kheda. He said in a sarcastic tone, “Pawan Khera’s press conference made the path to my victory easier. Because of him, Gaurav Gogoi also lost the elections. Assam Police has called him (Khera) for questioning, when he comes, I will feed him Assam’s famous peda.” In his address, Chief Minister Sarma thanked the Hindu voters and said, “This victory is the victory of BJP, PM Modi and Hindus. Hindus made me win as much as they could.” He also said in clear words, “I do not want the votes of Bangladeshi Muslims, but this time Assamese Muslims (indigenous Muslims) have openly voted for us, which is a positive change.”
Called Bengal’s victory ‘national pride’
Sarma expressed happiness over BJP’s historic victory in neighboring West Bengal and the end of Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year-old rule. Describing it as a ‘victory for the country’, he said, “Victory in Bengal could have happened in 2021 also, but at that time there was a fear among the people about security. Now BJP government is going to be formed in Bengal, which is a matter of pride for the whole of India.”
