Political rhetoric has intensified amid reports of seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs reportedly joining BJP. Party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has launched a strong attack on the issue, accusing BJP of “seat stealing”. Kejriwal said that if this has happened then it is not a good sign for democracy and his party will give its answer in the coming time. He also warned that the Aam Aadmi Party would give a “political response” to it next year.
Kejriwal said, “These seven people who have gone, they have gone by stealing. BJP has stolen. This seat did not belong to anyone’s father, it belonged to the people of Punjab.” He further alleged that the six Rajya Sabha seats of Punjab have been “robbered by the BJP” and termed this political development as against democracy. Kejriwal warned that its answer will be given in the coming time. He said, “Revenge will be taken in February next year.” It is noteworthy that assembly elections are to be held in Punjab next year. At such a time, the alleged defection of MPs is being considered as a big political blow for the Aam Aami Party, due to which the turmoil in the politics of the state has intensified.
Raghav Chadha had met President Draupadi Murmu
Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha on Tuesday made serious allegations against the Punjab government of Aam Aamdi Party. He said that the government is doing vendetta politics and the MPs who recently left the party and joined BJP are being targeted. Raghav Chadha along with his three other MPs met President Draupadi Murmu and submitted a memorandum. In this memorandum he alleged that “harassment and politically motivated action” was being taken against him. Chadha says that after separating from AAP, the government machinery is being misused against him and other leaders. He also demanded intervention from the President in this matter.
Chadha told reporters here after the meeting that he has put before the President the alleged treatment being meted out to the MPs who expressed their disagreement and decided to walk away from the Aam Aadmi Party. He said, “All the MPs who exercised their constitutional right to express their disagreement with the Aam Aadmi Party and the incidents happening to them have been placed before the President today.” Chadha further alleged that the attitude from the party’s side has changed. “As long as we remained obedient, we were considered cultured. As soon as we left the party, we were branded corrupt,” he said.
Accused of threatening MPs
Chadha claimed that many former AAP MPs who have joined BJP are being pressurized by state agencies and attempts are being made to intimidate them. He said that the same party which the opposition accused of “politics of revenge” now appears to be indulging in “politics of vengeance”. He also said that ever since he and other leaders left AAP and joined BJP on April 24, he and other MPs are being “systematically targeted” and harassed. Citing some examples, Chadha alleged that former cricketer and MP Harbhajan Singh was allegedly attacked, while industrialist and MP Rajendra Gupta’s business operations were being hampered.
