Be it the Mughals or the British, they could never rule Goa.
The major reason for the tension between Iran and America today is the sea. China also leaves no stone unturned to expand its footprint in the sea. India has a maritime border of about seven and a half thousand kilometers. India has a strong influence on the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. Similarly, there are many countries in the world, which want a strong influence on the sea at any cost. For this, many wars have taken place at different times. Due to this maritime power, the Portuguese ruled Goa for more than 450 years.
Despite their efforts, the Mughals who ruled for more than three hundred years could not achieve anything here, nor could the British who occupied the entire country. Now when there is tension in many parts of the world regarding sea power, it becomes interesting to know why the Mughals or the British could not capture Goa? How did this area remain untouched by them?
The story of Goa is interesting
The history of India is full of many invasions and regime changes. Both the Mughals and the British ruled large parts of the country. But there remained one area where both of them could not have complete control. This area is Goa. The story of Goa is different, interesting and holds a special place in the history books.

In ancient times, Goa was called Gomantak. This area was situated on the sea shore. There was a lot of business here. Dynasties like Satavahana, Chalukya and Kadamba ruled here. Historians say that during the Kadamba dynasty, both culture and trade developed in Goa. Temples, art and literature flourished. Goa was a prosperous area at that time.
Mughals did not even look towards Goa because of sea power.
The influence of the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughals spread over large parts of India. But Goa did not come completely under his control. The Bijapur Sultanate ruled Goa for some time. This governance was limited to the local level. The Mughals did not directly capture Goa. The main reason for this was Goa's geographical position and lack of maritime power.

The Mughals could not capture Goa.
Why didn't the Mughals capture it?
The Mughal Empire was powerful, but its strength was mainly on land. His power in the sea was limited. Goa was a coastal area. The Portuguese had a strong navy. Therefore it was not easy for the Mughals to attack Goa. Apart from this, the Mughals were more focused on North India and Central India, hence Goa was not their main target.
Why couldn't the British capture it?
The British ruled large parts of India, but Goa remained outside their control. The reason for this was that Goa was already under the control of the Portuguese. Both the British and Portuguese were European powers. Therefore there was almost no direct conflict between them. Historians say that the British did not consider Goa important for them, because they already had many big ports like Mumbai and Kolkata.

The Portuguese came and conquered Goa.
European powers started reaching India at the end of the 15th century. Vasco da Gama came to India in the year 1498. After this the Portuguese set their sights on Goa. In the year 1510, Afonso de Albuquerque snatched Goa from the Bijapur Sultanate. After this the Portuguese rule started on Goa. In history books it has been called Portuguese India. Goa became the main center of Portugal.
The Portuguese ruled Goa for about 450 years. This was the longest foreign rule in India. They built churches here, brought new culture and spread Christianity. Traces of Portuguese architecture and culture can still be seen in Goa. Old buildings, churches and roads testify to this.
Why did Goa remain separate even after independence?
- India became independent from the British in 1947, but Goa was still under the control of Portugal.
- The Indian government tried to take Goa peacefully, but Portugal was not ready.
- Finally in 1961 the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay. After this Goa became a part of India.

Goa has a special identity
Goa is known not only for its history but also for its culture. There is a unique combination of Indian and European culture here. Festivals, food and lifestyle, everything is different and attractive. Today Goa is a major tourist destination of India.
What do history books say?
Goa is considered a special example in history books. In books like Romila Thapar's book A History of India and Bipin Chandra's book India's Struggle for Independence, it has been told how the history of Goa was different from the rest of India. How did the local identity remain here despite foreign rule?
The history of Goa teaches us how important geographical position and sea power are. Both the Mughals and the British could not control Goa. The Portuguese ruled here for a long time, but eventually Goa became a part of India. Today Goa holds a special place in the entire country due to its distinct identity, culture and history.
