New Delhi. Despite the strong wave of BJP in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, it is historic that two Congress MLAs won the elections. Let us tell you that it is a big thing for two Congress candidates to win in Bengal, because last time the account of Congress was not even opened. This time also the Election Commission had made complete arrangements that the account of the Congress Party was not opened. These two MLAs who won on Congress ticket in Bengal are Motab Sheikh and Zulfiqar Ali.

Motab Sheikh was the candidate on Congress ticket from Farakka seat of Murshidabad, whose name was deleted from the SIR and the suspense increased only when he contested the assembly elections. After this he fought to get his name added.
Motab Sheikh had applied in the Appellate Tribunal to get his name added. The job of the Appellate Tribunal was to dispose of the applications of the people removed from the voter list. After the tribunal’s decision, Motab Sheikh’s name was again added to the voter list and only then he was able to contest the elections.
Motab defeated BJP’s Sunil Chaudhary
In Farakka seat, Congress’s Motab Shaikh defeated BJP’s Sunil Chaudhary by 8,193 votes. Motab received a total of 63,050 votes, while Sunil Chaudhary came second with 54,857 votes.

The victory of Congress’s Motab Sheikh in West Bengal was special. A few weeks before the elections, his name was removed from the voter list due to technical reasons. He approached the Supreme Court, where a bench led by the Chief Justice directed the newly constituted Appellate Tribunal to look into the case. The tribunal found his documents, including passport, in order and declared him a valid voter. His case was approved first among about 27 lakh applications. After the name was restored, Shaikh contested the elections from Farakka seat and defeated BJP’s Sudhir Chaudhary by more than 8 thousand votes.
