An unusual situation was seen in Kolkata’s State Secretariat Nabanna. After the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party with a huge majority in the assembly elections, many government employees suddenly gathered during work and started raising slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. The employees claimed that they had gathered in “joy” and now felt “free from fear”.
According to the information, employees of various departments gathered near the balconies of their respective floors and collectively raised slogans. Some employees were also seen waving ‘saffron’ cloth, which is being seen as a sign of political support. This development has created a stir in the administrative circles of the state.
“We hope that the new government will do something good for government employees,” said a government employee on condition of anonymity. This statement of the employees indicates that there is a feeling of expectations and change within the government system regarding the possible change of power.
On the other hand, during this time, some government employees under the banner of ‘Sangharshi Joint Forum’ were seen protesting outside the Swasthya Bhavan (headquarters of the Health Department). The protesters alleged that documents to corruption during the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government were being removed during the Covid-19 pandemic. They claim that this action is being taken under the leadership of the Health Secretary, although these allegations have not been officially confirmed.
Meanwhile, a team from the Public Works Department (PWD) visited the former state secretariat Writers Building. According to sources, there are plans to potentially convert this historic building into a new secretariat. The team inspected the rooms where the Chief Minister and other ministers can sit, so that repair and renovation work can be done accordingly.
BJP says that if it comes to power, some changes can be made in the administrative structure, which may also include decisions regarding the location and structure of the secretariat. However, an official announcement on this is awaited. Both the sloganeering of the employees inside Nabanna and the protest outside reflect the rapid changes taking place in the political and administrative circumstances of the state at this time.
