As a coffee-loving dietitian, I’ve crafted many an article about the health benefits of drinking coffee and stay up to date on the latest scientific research on coffee. So—no surprise here—when a new study hit my news feed recently, I dove in and pored over the findings. (Yes, pun intended!)
The study examined the impact of coffee on gut health—and how that influences mental wellness. First, those who drink coffee were compared to non-coffee drinkers. Then the coffee drinkers were broken into groups where they consumed either caffeinated coffee or decaf coffee.
They found that both the caffeine and decaf coffee groups had a more diverse gut microbiome, lower levels of some key inflammatory markers and higher levels of polyphenols. These three benefits are intertwined—the polyphenols help tamp down inflammation, and that’s good for gut health, and also, a more diverse microbiome may support higher levels of polyphenols. The groups reported lower stress and depression levels. Some notable differences between the groups: Caffeinated coffee drinkers experienced reduced anxiety, while decaf fans got a boost in memory and better sleep quality.
There were some limitations to the study, though. First, the study wasn’t very large—only 62 people participated. The mental health measures were self-reported, and while some were improved among coffee drinkers, things like impulsivity and emotional reactivity were higher in coffee drinkers compared to non-coffee drinkers.
Still, there weren’t negative health effects observed in the coffee drinkers, so my overall conclusion (albeit potentially over-simplified) is that my coffee habit is a science-supported lifestyle choice. Here’s how you can make your morning routine even better, from coffee storage to brewing.
Fellow Atmos Vacuum Coffee Canister, 0.7-Liter

Fellow is a well-known brand among coffee and tea nerds. Their kettles are both pretty and functional—and this coffee canister is, too. Choose from a glass version or a stainless steel version that comes in white or black. Fellow says it will keep air out for at least a week, thanks to the airtight vacuum pump technology.
Veken Coffee Canister with Window
Shoppers love this coffee storage container for its good looks and function, saying it “looks beautiful” on the kitchen counter and the size is “ideal for a standard bag of beans.” Now is a great time to add this to your Amazon cart while it’s 34% off.
ProKeeper Coffee Storage Container with Scoop, 1.5-Quart
This coffee storage canister has two unique features you don’t always see: a flip-top and tinted UV-blocking plastic. We also appreciate that this container is dishwasher-safe, which makes cleaning between refills much easier.
OXO Good Grips Airtight POP Container, 1.7-Quart
This airtight container from OXO has over 3,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. It’s also in my pantry. Admittedly, I used to use it for coffee storage (more on that below) and have now switched it over for storing dry goods like sugar and flour. One of my favorite things about this container is how easy the lid is to seal.
Zulay Kitchen Powerful Milk Frother Wand

If you mostly make your coffee at home, it’s worth purchasing a milk frother wand for those days when you want a slightly elevated coffee experience. This battery-operated wand is a great value at just $15. Amazon shoppers also love it—clearly—with more than 10,000 five-star ratings.
Café Specialty Grind and Brew Coffee Maker

I’ve been quite loyal to Ninja coffee makers for many years—in fact, I purchased two and many replacement parts over the years. So I was skeptical when I was asked to test this Café coffee maker, but it’s so pretty that I thought it deserved some real estate on my kitchen counter, albeit temporarily. Fast-forward six-plus months, and I’m not going back. Not only do I love its performance and aesthetic, but the built-in grinder with storage is a serious perk.
Haden Heritage Stainless Steel Electric Kettle, 1.7-Liter

I’ve been testing this electric kettle for about a year now (the kind folks at Haden sent it to me!), and it has earned a permanent spot on my kitchen counter. I’ve tested at least four other kettles in the last couple of years, and the simplicity of this one is what sold me, plus its good looks. I really appreciate that it has a simple on/off button, an auto-shutoff, and a capacity large enough to make multiple cups of coffee or tea.
