An intern confided in a co-worker and complained about the office, resulting in the loss of her permanent job. Instead of a job, she got a 3-month internship extension. This incident highlights the risks of trusting anyone in the workplace.
An employee has described how he may have lost his permanent job because he trusted a colleague during his internship at an Indian company. On Reddit's 'Indian Workplace' forum, the worker shared her ordeal in a post titled, "A lesson about trust in the workplace that I learned the hard way."
The worker told that he was working hard as an intern in a software company for three months, so that he could get a permanent job. Meanwhile, a new intern joined the company and quickly became close to the HR team. In the beginning this worker did not pay much attention to it.
Later, considering that new colleague as a friend, he told him about some of the problems in the office. This also included how his team lead took credit for his work. "One day I made a mistake by venting out my anger on him. I thought he was my friend. I trusted him," the worker wrote.
The worker further wrote, "Looking back now, there was a hint which I completely ignored. The same intern had once told me during a conversation how in school he had thrown away the revision notebook of a topper before the exam. Just like that. No regrets, nothing. He told me this story as if it was a funny memory. People tell you how they really are, it's just that we don't pay attention."
Shortly after this conversation, her team lead's behavior changed. When the time came to get a permanent job, the worker was told that his internship was being extended by three months. She was told, "You need an extension of three months. You cannot work alone. Your analytical thinking is very good, but you still need an extension."
The decision was a surprise, especially because a full-time co-worker had told her she had a good chance of being confirmed. When the worker thought about this incident, he remembered the intern's incident at school in which he had put down a classmate. The worker also told that due to this shock, one of his personal plans was also postponed. He wanted to get his mother treated after getting a confirmed job.

People online gave mixed reactions to this post. Some users stressed the importance of maintaining boundaries in the office, while others sympathized and called it a bitter lesson. One user wrote, "People don't make friends in the office - it's just social and formal conversation." Another user said that he completely avoids discussing work-related topics with his colleagues.
