Parts of the UK could be hit by snowfall of up to 10 millimetres before the week is out, according to new weather maps. Forecasts from WXCharts show the wintry spell descending on Scotland and parts of northern England from around 6pm on Sunday, May 10. The flurries could continue over a 24-hour period until around 6pm on Monday, May 11, stretching as far south as Leicester.

The snowfall will be most concentrated in central and eastern Scotland, around Glasgow and Aberdeen, with patchy spells around Manchester, Cumbria and Leicester. Weather projections also show intermittent rainfall across most of the UK on Sunday evening, including near London in the southeast.

The change in weather, following temperatures of up to 25C last week, will be accompanied by a drop in temperature to as low as -8C in Scotland and just below freezing in northern England regions.

The Met Office's long-range forecast for May 10 to May 19 also warns of "heavy and locally thundery" rain showers across parts of England and Wales.

The national forecaster says next week will likely usher in "widely unsettled conditions" with temperatures "near or below average, especially in the north, with an ongoing risk of overnight rural frost".

Today:

A chilly start to the day with intermittent sunny spells and showers, with rainfall largely confined to the far west and east of the UK. Temperatures expected to be below average.

Tonight:

Rainfall in northern Scotland but dry elsewhere apart from a few showers in the west. Possibly frosty conditions in rural areas.

Thursday:

Windy and wet conditions in the northwest with drier and warmer conditions further south and east.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Weather growing more unsettled heading into the weekend, with a mix of sunshine and showers across the country and risk of thunder in some areas. Temperatures expected to remain warm in the south but grow colder in the north.
