A viral video circulating online has once again turned the spotlight on Kota after multiple suicides by engineering and medical aspirants. The clip widely shared across social media platforms shows hostel ceiling fans enclosed in heavy iron grills reportedly as a measure to prevent student suicides.
The caged reality of student’s safety
The new changes to the hostels look scary instead of helpful. Seeing extra bars makes people feel nervous rather than safe. Instead of fixing the real problem by taking steps like providing counseling, these changes just remind everyone that things are still broken. It feels like putting a tiny bandage on a deep wound that won’t heal.
This is the reality of student life in coaching hubs like Kota. Instead of addressing the mounting mental pressure and academic stress, the “solution” is to put iron cages around ceiling fans. We need to talk about student well-being, not just physical barriers. 💔 pic.twitter.com/8ROnxKzDRb

Kota has long been associated with intense preparation for competitive exams such as IIT-JEE and NEET. Every year, thousands of students move to the city with hopes of securing a place in top institutions. Alongside these ambitions, however, there has been a troubling rise in student deaths by suicide, forcing authorities and hostel operators to consider interventions.
Beyond metal bars, the mental health gap
However, these physical modifications including spring loaded devices that will detach under excessive weight made to reduce the risk of self-harm, has sparked debate about the ignored mental stress of the students.
The viral video shows the installation of metal grills around fans. Although there is no official confirmation that caging system have been widely implemented across hostels in Kota.
The move reflects the pressures within India’s competitive exam system and the urgent need to look beyond surface-level fixes. The focus now shifts to whether meaningful support systems can match the intensity of the environment students are expected to navigate.
