A big controversy has emerged in the politics of West Bengal. Former Indian cricketer and current Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Manoj Tiwari has made serious allegations against the party and said that ‘TMC’s chapter is over’ for him. Tiwari claimed that he was not given the ticket from Shivpur seat in Howrah because he refused to pay Rs 5 crore.
40-year-old Tiwari, the batsman who scored the most runs (10,195 first class runs) in the history of Bengal cricket, has also been the Minister of State for Sports in the Mamata Banerjee government. After BJP’s victory in the recently held assembly elections, he accused the party leadership of corruption.
In an interview, Tiwari said, “I am not at all surprised by this defeat. When the entire party is involved in corruption and there is no development in any area, this is bound to happen.” He alleged that this time at least 70-72 candidates paid around Rs 5 crore to get tickets. Tiwari told that he had also received a similar offer, but he rejected it. He said, “I was also asked for money, but I flatly refused. You see for yourself how many of those who gave money were able to win.”
He also revealed that he initially did not intend to enter politics. In 2019, he received an offer to contest the Lok Sabha elections, which he rejected. However, before the 2021 assembly elections, at the behest of Mamata Banerjee, he contested from Shivpur seat and won.
Tiwari also alleged lack of internal democracy in TMC. He said that ministers did not get adequate opportunity to express their views in the meetings. If I tried to draw attention to any issue, I was interrupted.
He also expressed his displeasure over basic problems like drainage and sewage in Howrah. According to Tiwari, he raised these issues several times, but no concrete action was taken. He also said that he got some development works completed by investing money from his own pocket.
Tiwari also rejected the allegations of extortion against him. He said that he already has enough wealth and he does not need any such work. He said, I have played IPL for 10 years and first class cricket for 20 years, I do not need to take money from anyone.
Tiwari also targeted Sports Minister Arup Biswas and alleged that he did not give him a chance to work. Tiwari said that he was not even invited on stage in many programs. Moving on from politics, Tiwari is now planning to make a career in cricket coaching. He has applied for the post of head coach of the Bengal Ranji team and has also passed the BCCI Level-2 coaching exam.
