Why Schools Around The World Are Turning To Pickleball For Smarter, Healthier Children

Pickleball is rapidly finding a place in schools across the world as educators and coaches look for sports that are accessible, engaging and beneficial for students of different age groups.
Once seen mainly as a recreational activity, the sport is now becoming part of structured school programmes because of the physical, mental and social advantages it offers children.
The game combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, but is played on a smaller court with lightweight paddles and a plastic ball. This makes it easier for beginners to pick up quickly. Unlike many traditional sports that require extensive training before students can compete confidently, pickleball allows children to participate and enjoy the game from an early stage.
One of the biggest advantages of pickleball in schools is inclusivity. Students with varying fitness levels can play together without feeling overwhelmed. The smaller court size reduces physical strain while still helping children improve movement, coordination, balance and reflexes. Physical education teachers also believe the sport helps children stay active without the intimidation that sometimes comes with highly competitive school sports.
The game also encourages concentration and decision-making. Since rallies develop quickly and players are constantly involved in the action, students need to react fast and think strategically. Coaches say this helps improve focus, communication and teamwork during matches.
Another important factor behind pickleball's rise in schools is affordability. Existing badminton courts can often be adapted for pickleball, while paddles and balls are comparatively inexpensive. This allows schools to introduce the sport without major infrastructure investment.
The growing role of pickleball in schools was recently highlighted in France, where the Lucciana school sports association claimed the French Shortennis and Pickleball championship title after a strong performance in the national competition.
The tournament featured a demanding mixed-team format consisting of two singles matches and one doubles match. The order of play was decided through a random draw shortly before the contests began, adding extra pressure and unpredictability for the students.
Led by young coach Nolwenn Gea, the Lucciana team produced consistent performances throughout the competition. Nicolas Legrand, Clara Huet and Maxime Deliquet Peix played important roles in securing the title, while referee Zoé Fresil also contributed during the campaign.
The players displayed strong technical ability and composure under pressure to emerge as champions. The school also credited physical education teachers Hugo Berthoud and Sandrine Fournier for guiding the students during their run to the national title.
Following the victory, the club thanked the Corsican Tennis League and UNSS Corsica for their support throughout the campaign.
Competitions like these show how pickleball is evolving beyond a recreational pastime and becoming an organised school sport. Inter-school events and mixed-team formats are giving students opportunities to compete, collaborate and develop confidence in a healthy environment.
As schools continue searching for sports that combine fitness, teamwork and accessibility, pickleball is steadily emerging as one of the most practical options for the next generation of students.
