IPL 2026: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings, Match 49 - Who Said What?
CricTracker | May 7, 2026 3:39 AM CST

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) thumped Punjab Kings (PBKS) by a comfortable 33-run margin in Match No. 49 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, May 06.

Being put into bat first, the Sunrisers started in blistering fashion, with the star opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma taking the Punjab bowlers to the cleaners. They put on a 54-run stand off just 21 balls before Abhishek fell for 35 off just 13 balls. Head fell soon after, for 38 off 19 balls. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen were handed lives with dropped catches, and they ensured to make the Kings pay, scoring 55 off 32 and 69 off 43, respectively, as the home team notched up a massive 235/4 in their 20 overs.

The visitors were dented early by the loss of openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, with just seven balls completed in the innings. They finished the powerplay on 57/3, also losing skipper Shreyas Iyer in that span of time. They kept losing wickets as the Sunrisers bowlers chipped away. The Kings finished their innings on 202/7, with Cooper Connolly notching up his maiden T20 century, finishing unbeaten on 107 off 59 balls.

SRH vs PBKS: Talking Points 1. Did Punjab lose this game in the field?

Not one, not two, but three catches were dropped by the Punjab Kings in this game. Ishan Kishan was dropped twice, by Cooper Connolly and Lockie Ferguson on 9 and 18, and Shashank Singh dropped Heinrich Klaasen on 9. The two batters took their lives and made the Punjab Kings pay, stitching a partnership of 88 runs from 48 balls, the backbone of the Sunrisers' innings. The Kings would be ruing their missed chances as the Sunrisers got to an imposing 235/4 in their 20 overs.

2. Sunrisers’ bowlers rise to the occasion

The Sunrisers looked like one of the weaker bowling sides before the start of the season. Now, they stand outright as the best bowling side in the tournament, a key facet of their seven wins in the tournament. Pat Cummins' return has boosted them massively, as he adds international experience to the attack. Eshan Malinga has been a strike bowler, supported ably by death-over specialist Sakib Hussain and the resurgent Nitish Kumar Reddy. They dented the opposition early, with Cummins and Reddy removing the openers cheaply, before Shreyas Iyer fell to Malinga. These three early wickets helped break the back of the Kings' innings.

3. What's next for Shreyas Iyer & Co.?

The Punjab Kings started the season unbeaten in seven games, but have now lost three on the bounce. They have had failures with the bat in the last two games and were taken around the park by the Rajasthan Royals. They will need to regroup after this game to ensure they are back to winning ways.

SRH vs PBKS: Who Said What? Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings captain,

"It was a bit too much. We dropped too many catches. We could have restricted them by 30-40 runs. The wicket slowed up. Th cutters were holding up. They played comprehensive cricket and showed us how to win.

(On the slump in the middle of the campaign) I feel we got a fairytale start. Everyone was in a great space, the mindset was top notch. It is easy to get diverted. If we are going to continue with the same form, it won't help. But we have to go back and reflect on what we did not do well in the last 3 games. We have to come back strong.

(On Cooper Connolly) He is phenomenal. His mindset is top notch. The character he shows on the field is something you can learn from. Also, I feel he has a knack of scoring big in pressure situations, which he has shown before and showed again here too.

(On Yuzvendra Chahal) The way he bowled, he was fearless. His attitude, especially against the lefties was fantastic. I told him to be attacking. Unfortunately, we did not take the catches and that was a big setback."

Pat Cummins, Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain & Player of the Match

"[on the pleasing aspect of the match] There's a few. Punjab are a really good side. Number 1 coming into this and the batters to get up to what we did was sensational. Closing out, no matter what the score is. Bowling 2nd against a side like that is always tough but we were quite clinical.

[on success while batting first] We're pretty good at playing at our own pace. Don't try and start off conservatively. It's not really Abhi and Travis' style. It's trying to max out as much as we can. Not really thinking about a total or anything and then maybe later in the innings if it takes in a different direction, we've been pretty good at adjusting.

[on home advantage] We played some really good cricket here over the last couple of years. It suited our style. Even tonight it gripped a little bit which kind of suits a lot our bowlers towards the end and we feel like no matter which way, this pitch kind of takes us mid game, we've seen it before and we can adjust.

[on personal performance] Happy with it. Still don't know how I got that award but I feel really good. Came into this fresh. Had pretty good prep. I'm feeling great, happy I can contribute.

[on Arya's wicket] Not much has worked in the powerplay for any team so we tried to be a bit more proactive today. Had our plans but didn't have many other options and unfortunately it came off tonight. Try and move the field, pretend a bit more's happening than actually is.

[on rotating bowlers] We have lots of options. With Nitish as an allrounder I feel like we always got 6 or 7 options. I always like having a bit of a clear mind for the first kind of how the powerplay could look and then after that fairly open mind of where it can take me.

[on Connolly] Yeah. Happy. Good result. Good to see the Aussies doing well. He's been a star this season for them. Not bowling at the moment but still showing his worth. Good time for us. [on if this is their season] Still a bit of time to go so we've actually had a bit of break now so we'll save in the top for a little bit. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else than number 1 so happy."
