Shashank Singh, a batter for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), has once again found himself in the spotlight for unfortunate reasons after missing a vital catch during the IPL 2026 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on May 6.

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first, allowing SRH to post an impressive total of 235 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. The innings featured explosive performances from Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, who scored 69 runs off 43 balls and 55 runs off 32 balls, respectively, showcasing strike rates of 160.47 and 171.88.

Early Momentum Shift in Favor of SRH

The opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head set the tone for SRH, scoring 35 runs off 13 balls and 38 runs off 19 balls, achieving strike rates of 269.23 and 200, respectively. Their aggressive start put significant pressure on the PBKS bowlers.

Shashank Singh's Fielding Woes Continue

As PBKS attempted to regain control of the match, Shashank Singh's fielding issues resurfaced. He dropped a crucial catch of Heinrich Klaasen, who was on just 9 runs, off a delivery from Yuzvendra Chahal.

Klaasen capitalized on this mistake, adding another 60 runs to his score and significantly shifting the match's momentum in favor of SRH. PBKS coach Ricky Ponting acknowledged Shashank's ongoing struggles in the field, stating, "Poor Shashank Singh, it seems the ball is flying everywhere he’s going."

A Season of Missed Opportunities

This incident marked the fifth catch dropped by Shashank Singh in the current IPL season. Previously, he had dropped three catches against the Lucknow Super Giants and one against KL Rahul during a match against the Delhi Capitals. His misjudgment on a boundary catch against LSG was particularly notable.

Fans expressed their disbelief and frustration on social media, with many highlighting the impact of his fielding lapses on the team's performance.

Calls for Strategic Changes

Shashank Singh's ongoing difficulties have sparked discussions on social media, with many fans questioning his position in the playing XI. Suggestions have emerged to limit his role to batting only, using him as an Impact Player to alleviate pressure during fielding.

Critics have urged the team management to reconsider his fielding assignments or allow him time away from the field to rebuild his confidence.

Punjab Kings' Recent Performance

Despite the challenges, PBKS faced their third consecutive defeat, losing to SRH by 33 runs. Chasing a target of 236 runs, they managed only 202 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, with Cooper Connolly's unbeaten 107 being a standout performance.

Currently, PBKS holds the second position in the standings with six wins from ten matches, while SRH has climbed to the top with seven victories in eleven games.
