Washington: US President Donald Trump has made an announcement which has created a stir in international politics. He has indicated that America is going to make a big cut in the number of its troops deployed in Germany. Speaking to the media before boarding Air Force One in Florida on Saturday, Trump said that the US would make a ‘major reduction’ in the number of its troops deployed in Germany.
Trump also made it clear that this reduction will not be limited to 5,000 soldiers, but could be even more. On the other hand, the Pentagon has officially informed that out of the approximately 36,000 American soldiers present in Germany, a plan has been made to withdraw about 5,000 soldiers. This process can be completed within the next 6 to 12 months.
Increasing tension with NATO
This decision has been taken at a time when relations between America and NATO are increasing sour. Many NATO countries have raised questions on America’s strategy, especially regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. Trump has criticized NATO before also. Describing this military alliance as “weak”, he even said that America can also come out of it. Trump believes that he did not get the expected support from NATO during the Iran war.
Germany’s reaction and outrage
Germany, where many important US military bases are located, has also raised questions on American policies. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently said that the Iranian leadership is “humiliating” the US and US strategy needs to be reconsidered. After his statement, America’s displeasure came out openly. Immediately after this, the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of troops, which many analysts are seeing as a strong message towards Germany.
Pentagon’s official stance
The Pentagon has clarified that the withdrawal of troops will be a planned process and will not be implemented hastily. However, many questions still remain regarding the real strategy behind this decision. NATO has also reacted on this issue and said that it is trying to understand all aspects of this decision along with America. Coalition officials say that this step could have an impact on the security system of the entire Europe.
Deployment increased after Ukraine war
It is noteworthy that after the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, America had increased the number of its troops in Germany. At that time this step was taken to strengthen the security of Europe. But now in the current situation, this decision of America points towards a strategic change. This also indicates that America is changing its priorities.
Germany’s restrained response
Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has given a balanced reaction to this decision. He said that the withdrawal of troops by America is ‘not unexpected’ and this possibility was already being anticipated. He also stressed that if trans-Atlantic relations are to remain strong, European countries must strengthen their role within NATO.
