Despite their constant presence, skirting boards are often overlooked in everyday cleaning routines, making them ideal dust collectors. Being placed in every room, they collect debris, pet hair, lint and dust constantly. Cleaning them can feel like a chore, having to get down low to wipe them with a microfibre cloth or dusting cloth.
But, even then, using these methods means the dust will soon reappear. That's when I discovered a genius hack that has made a real difference.
It involves using tumble dryer sheets. Typically used in laundry to soften fabrics and reduce static, tumble dryer sheets are ideal for dusting.
Their slightly tacky surface helps lift and trap dust rather than just push it around. Additionally, they leave behind a light anti-static residue that helps repel dust after cleaning.
Using them is straightforward, too. I simply used a fresh dryer sheet and ran it along the length of all the skirting boards.
I noticed straightaway how effective it was in picking up dust, especially compared to a microfibre cloth, which I usually use.
The sheet glided along the surface, and I cleaned all of the skirting boards within my home in 10 minutes.
The real test was to see how long it took for the dust to resettle, but it's been a couple of weeks, and there's still no settling.
I pick up my tumble dryer sheets from Home Bargains for around £2, but they can be bought from any supermarket.
The best thing is to purchase scented sheets, so your entire home will be subtly fragranced.
I also always have tumble dryer sheets in my cleaning cupboard, so this hack costs me virtually nothing.
Cleaning skirting boards may not be the most glamorous task, but it's essential year-round to keep your home dust-free, especially if you suffer from allergies.
