BJP leader Agnimitra Paul won Asansol South by a margin of over 40,000 votes. He won his seat by defeating Tapas Banerjee of TMC. According to some BJP officials, if BJP wants to make its female candidate the Chief Minister in place of Mamata Banerjee, then Agnimitra Paul can be an ideal Chief Minister candidate. She has been a Lok Sabha MP from 2019 to 2024.

Agnimitra Paul’s journey before becoming a politician has been quite impressive. After Agnimitra Paul graduated from Jadavpur University, she started her career in the world of fashion. He designed clothes for famous Bollywood stars like Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty. She has launched her own clothing brand ‘Inga’, which is available in major cities of India.

23 criminal cases are registered

There are 23 criminal cases pending against Agnimitra Paul. Charges against them include joining unlawful assembly, violent protest, rioting, disobedience to statutory orders of public authorities, disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant, intentional insult or provocation with intent to provoke breach of peace or public disorder, statements or communications promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between different groups, etc.

Who are the contenders for the post of Chief Minister of Bengal?

Apart from Agnimitra Paul, Suvendu Adhikari, who was the leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, is also one of the strong contenders for the post of Chief Minister of the state. Adhikari emerged as the leader who pulled off a major upset in the Bengal elections when he defeated incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by over 15,000 votes from Bhawanipur constituency. This is the second time that he had achieved the same feat in Nandigram in 2021. Apart from this, this time also Adhikari contested elections from both the above mentioned seats and won both.
