Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has underlined the importance of strong opening partnerships as his team prepares for a crucial IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS). With both teams known for their aggressive batting styles, Vettori anticipates a high-scoring contest where early momentum could prove decisive.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Vettori highlighted how the performance of opening pairs often dictates the outcome of matches, especially in a fast-paced tournament like the Indian Premier League.

Vettori pointed out that PBKS’ recent defeats were largely influenced by the lack of contributions from their opening pair. According to him, this early setback significantly alters the course of a team’s innings.

“In both of PBKS’ losses, their opening pair obviously hasn’t got a score, so that puts a different perspective on how you go about the game,” Vettori said.

Drawing parallels with his own side, the SRH coach stressed that the team’s success is also heavily reliant on its openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. He noted that when the duo gets going, it creates a strong foundation for the rest of the batting line-up.

“It’s the same for us. We know when Travis and Abhishek get away, how much it sets up a team performance, and it’s exactly the same for Punjab. So, a lot of emphasis on those two batters and how we’re going to cope with them,” he added.

PBKS’ aggressive approach draws praise

Vettori was full of praise for PBKS’ opening combination, describing them as “incredibly impressive” and highlighting their aggressive mindset at the top of the order. He also acknowledged the depth and balance in Punjab’s batting unit, which has delivered consistent performances throughout the season.

“That opening combination has been incredibly impressive, and they’ve had complementary performances from the majority of their batting line-ups. In a lot of ways, they’re like us. They’re very aggressive with the bat, and then they just try and mitigate anything they can with the ball,” Vettori explained.

He further noted that PBKS appear to be a well-drilled unit with a clear game plan, making them a formidable opponent in the ongoing season.

High-scoring encounter on the cards

Given the batting firepower on both sides, Vettori expects a run-fest when SRH take on PBKS. However, he emphasised that the outcome of the match will likely depend on how well the bowling units handle pressure in such conditions.

“You’d anticipate a high-scoring game, and it’s the bowling unit that can deal with that pressure, really,” he said.

The Hyderabad-based franchise has enjoyed a strong batting season so far, and Vettori expressed confidence in his players’ ability to deliver consistently. He highlighted that SRH’s batting line-up has performed exceptionally well in the majority of their matches.

SRH banking on batting consistency

Looking ahead to the clash, Vettori reiterated the importance of maintaining momentum in a short tournament like the IPL. He stressed that teams cannot afford to dwell on losses and must instead focus on their strengths.

“I think the IPL is so short and fast that you have to be ready for every game, and you can’t let a loss linger. You just have to focus on those things that have really worked during the season,” he said.

He added that SRH’s batting unit has been a standout feature this season, delivering strong performances in eight out of ten matches.

“The majority of our time, I think eight out of ten games, our batting order has been outstanding. So we have full confidence in them and their ability to perform like they have the majority of the season,” Vettori remarked.

PBKS currently lead the points table with 13 points from nine matches, having secured six wins.
