After the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) came out, Congress is attacking the BJP government regarding the law and order of Madhya Pradesh. Putting the state government in the dock, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar has said that on one hand the government organizes big programs for women empowerment and raises slogans, on the other hand the crime figures are revealing the horrific reality of the state.

He said that crimes against women are a growing concern in the state and Madhya Pradesh is among those states in the country where incidents of crime against women remain at the top level. He alleged that the government’s entire focus is on “event management and image building”, while security arrangements and accountability are becoming weak.

Situation of Madhya Pradesh is worrying in NCRB report

According to the 2024 report of NCRB, Madhya Pradesh along with many big states has been included in the top five in cases of crimes against women in the country. The number of cases to women in the state has been more than 32 thousand in a year, due to which on an average more than 90 incidents are reported every day. Uttar Pradesh topped the list in crimes against women, while Maharashtra and Rajasthan were also among the states with high crime rates. Madhya Pradesh is continuously maintaining its place in the top-5 in this list.

According to National Crime Records Bureau data, there has been a continuous increase in crimes against the elderly in Madhya Pradesh and the state stood first in the country in this category. Apart from this, Madhya Pradesh is on top in crimes against Scheduled Tribe category, while the state has been recorded at second place in cases to Scheduled Caste category. However, this year there has been some relief in the cases of crimes against children and Madhya Pradesh has now reached the third position, whereas last year it was at the first position.

According to the report, there has been a decline in new cases of cyber crime in the state, but the situation regarding pending cases and conviction rate still remains challenging. Investigation is pending in many cases and questions are also being raised on the slow pace of the judicial process.

Umang Singhar asked questions to the state government

After the arrival of this report, the political debate regarding law and order in Madhya Pradesh has intensified. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar has raised serious questions on the state government and said that the crime figures in the state are exposing the truth of the government’s claims of “women empowerment”. He alleged that on one hand the government talks about the safety and respect of women from big platforms, while on the other hand the ground reality remains worrying. He said that NCRB data shows that Madhya Pradesh remains in a serious situation in cases of crimes against women, atrocities on the elderly and crimes against Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

The Congress leader asked in which direction the “double engine government” is working… in improving law and order or just in publicity and event management. Umang Singhar said that increasing crimes against women and elderly people and continuous atrocities on social classes show that there is a lack of administrative sensitivity. He demanded the government to go beyond mere slogans and campaigns and establish concrete security arrangements and accountability.
