The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is expediting the introduction of a third language in schools. All affiliated institutions have been instructed to finalize their selection of a third language (R3) for Class 6 promptly and to update this information on the OASIS portal. This new requirement will be compulsory starting from the academic year 2026-27, with a final compliance deadline set for May 31, 2026. Schools that do not meet this deadline may face disciplinary actions.

This initiative is in line with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. Following a circular released in April 2026, CBSE has shown a strong commitment to this implementation. While several schools have already submitted their language choices, others are either delayed or have not yet complied with the guidelines.

The Board has stated that textbooks for languages listed in the Constitution will be accessible on the NCERT and CBSE websites by July 1, 2026. Should a school opt for a language not included in this list, it may use state-approved textbooks, provided it adheres to the learning outcomes set by the National Curriculum.

CBSE has made the Three-Language Formula (R1, R2, R3) mandatory for all schools, requiring at least two Indian languages to be included. Schools that have not yet adopted this system must implement it by July 1, 2026. The Board's Regional Offices will oversee this process and provide necessary support to schools.
