WARSAW, Poland (AP) - A grassroots soccer club in Warsaw, known as AKS Zły, was established over a decade ago to combat the aggressive nationalist culture prevalent in Polish stadiums.
The club is now seeking to reaffirm its significance in a country where the president has openly acknowledged his past involvement in fan violence. Founded in 2015 by supporters of Warsaw's prominent soccer teams, Legia and Polonia, AKS Zły aims to foster an inclusive environment amidst the hostile atmosphere often experienced at Polish matches. The club operates democratically, maintaining ownership and governance by its fans. Inclusive Values AKS Zły's coordinator, Jan Dziubecki, emphasized the club's mission to create a welcoming space for all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation, race, or nationality. He noted that the current fan culture in Poland has shifted towards extreme right-wing ideologies, making hateful slogans commonplace. Despite the potential for President Karol Nawrocki's administration to reinforce the nationalist sentiments that AKS Zły opposes, Dziubecki expressed optimism. He remarked, "Maybe more fans will come to our stadium again," highlighting a possibility for increased support.
Community Engagement Juliusz Wrzosek, a co-founder of AKS Zły and owner of a local bar in Warsaw, plays an active role in promoting the club. His experiences as a former Legia Warszawa supporter led him to establish AKS Zły after feeling alienated by radical fan behavior. Wrzosek explained, "Because you have to support someone," emphasizing the need for a club that embraces diverse supporters. His bar serves as a gathering place for fans and hosts events that honor local history, such as a recent tribute to socialist worker Stefan Okrzeja, reflecting the club's commitment to social causes. Supportive Atmosphere At a recent women's match against Słupca, AKS Zły fans displayed a spirit of camaraderie, singing welcoming songs and encouraging their team. The atmosphere remained respectful, with minimal complaints about officiating. Eliza Górska-Tran, a former player and current supporter, highlighted the importance of the community surrounding the club, stating, "It's not just empty words when you say that the fans are the 12th player, because it really helps and motivates you to give more."
Embracing Diversity AKS Zły prides itself on inclusivity, welcoming LGBTQ+ and immigrant players and ensuring equal investment in both men's and women's teams. The club's youth academy operates on a model where wealthier families support those with fewer resources. Górska-Tran recounted a memorable experience when fans organized a wedding ceremony for her and her partner at the stadium, underscoring the club's supportive environment. "Football should unite us all, not divide us, because there's enough of that in society already," added Alicja Cichońska, a player for AKS Zły.
