A period drama for the ages, this television series has captivated audiences for years, and as new viewers continue to discover it, they are left thoroughly satisfied and eager for more.
Fans of Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife will adore this four-season ITV drama, which has defined the genre and left viewers utterly spellbound.
Rooted in a true story, audiences can expect to discover the dramatised tale of one of England's wealthiest men, who amassed his fortune in the world of retail.
Mr Selfridge is a period drama chronicling the life and career of Harry Selfridge and his world-renowned department store, Selfridges, in London.
The series spans the years 1908 to 1929, taking viewers on a remarkable journey as he successfully revolutionises the concept of the department store in the heart of the capital on Oxford Street, London.
Among his contemporaries are a host of other notable historical figures with whom he mingles throughout the ensuing decades. These celebrated individuals include French aviator Louis Blériot, Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, and even British monarch Edward VII.
The programme captures both the ascent of his wealth and his considerable influence on retail, as well as his eventual downfall, when he is compelled to relinquish his position during the 1920s.
While grounded in real events, the series embellishes certain details to paint a richer picture for audiences, with many describing it as an 'excellent' production.
One viewer on IMDb hailed it a "delightful British masterpiece". They wrote: "I'm a late arrival to this true gem of a series, giving me the distinct benefit and joy of watching back-to-back episodes in a binge-viewing.
"Frankly, my initial reaction was, 'What could be interesting about a department store?' ' I'm glad I went with a friend's recommendation and had a view."
Another glowing review from an impressed viewer described it as "a period drama worth watching".
They wrote: "When I first read about the show I was sceptical, but I found I fell in love with it from the first view. The way the story is distributed among multiple characters is definitely something you don't see every day, or at least not with the quality that Mr Selfridge has."
Mr Selfridge has drawn widespread acclaim for its meticulous recreation of the era, particularly in terms of its fashion and set design, and it is precisely these finer details that elevate a period drama above the rest.
Portraying the late Harry Selfridge is American actor Jeremy Piven, widely recognised for his role in Entourage. Also featuring in the series are Amanda Abbington, Katherine Kelly, and Aisling Loftus.
One viewer shared: "I had high expectations, and this series surpassed them." They went on to elaborate, stating: "Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love series set decades (or in this case, a century) ago.
"However, in recent times, with the growth in number of these shows, I worry that some are churned out lacking the necessary quality and are present more as an exhibition of period clothing than exceptional storylines.
"This show, however, was just excellent in my opinion. It challenges viewers whilst capturing the time period. The characters are all divine in their ways."
The beloved drama spanned four series in total, concluding in 2016. Every episode of Mr Selfridge is currently available to watch on demand via ITVX.
