NHAI Due Toll Payment: The toll collection system in India is undergoing rapid transformation with the aim of reducing traffic congestion on the roads. With this objective in mind, the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system is currently being implemented.
NHAI New Rule: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has established a 72-hour deadline for the payment of missed tolls under the new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system. This means that if a toll deduction fails—whether due to a low balance in your FASTag account or a technical glitch—the system will identify your vehicle and dispatch an e-notice to your registered mobile number.
If you settle your outstanding toll payment within 72 hours of receiving the e-notice, you will be required to pay only the standard toll tax amount. However, if you fail to pay the outstanding toll even after the 72-hour deadline has elapsed, you will be charged double the standard toll amount.
What is the Objective of the New Rule?
The primary objective of this new NHAI rule is to enhance compliance within India's first barrier-free tolling system, while simultaneously ensuring uninterrupted and smooth travel experiences on the highways. Consequently, several toll plazas are being constructed along the highways where vehicles will no longer be required to come to a halt; instead, your vehicle's license plate will be automatically scanned by cameras. The NHAI strongly recommends that travelers recharge their FASTags at least 72 hours prior to commencing their journey to avoid any inconvenience at toll plazas caused by potential delays in bank server processing.
Opportunity to File Complaints
If you believe that an e-notice has been issued to you in error, you have the option to register a formal complaint on the official portal within that same 72-hour window.
Suspension of Vehicle Services
If the outstanding toll payment remains unsettled even after more than 15 days have passed since the receipt of the e-notice, your vehicle may be blacklisted on the 'VAHAN' portal. This could lead to difficulties in RTO-related services.
