Chennai: Tamil Nadu Police on Wednesday night (May 6) reportedly withdrew the escort and additional security provided to TVK chief C Joseph Vijay amid ongoing political developments related to government formation in the state.
According to reports, Vijay had earlier been provided Z+ category-like security arrangements equivalent to that of a chief minister-level protocol. The additional security has now reportedly been scaled down.
Police had increased security at Vijay’s residence and office after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), registered major gains during the Tamil Nadu Assembly election vote counting on May 4.
Officials said security arrangements were made to manage the large gathering of party workers and fans outside Vijay’s residence following the election results.
However, a senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, reportedly said that senior TVK leaders had requested the withdrawal of the escort security, stating that Vijay did not require the additional protection.
Y-category security to continueReports said that although the special commando and escort security arrangements have been withdrawn, Vijay will continue to receive Y-category security provided by the Central government.
Sources also stated that private security personnel are continuing to provide protection to Vijay.
